VIMSAR director resigns over ‘salt therapy’ issue

Sambalpur: Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) Director Dr Aswini Kumar Pujahari, who had courted controversy last year by applying ‘salt therapy’ on a patient during surgery, resigned from his post today.

Pujahari sent his resignation to Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal this morning.

Notably, a video showing Pujahari’s team pouring table salt on a patient following a surgery had gone viral last year. Pujahari had received sharp criticism from various forums for the practise known as ‘salt therapy’ and considered ‘unethical’ as per the medical standard.

Later the State Health Department had ordered a probe on the issue which disapproved the practise of Pujahari.

Odisha Government on December 7 issued a ‘show cause’ notice to the director of the unitary university based on the probe report and sent him on leave till the notice is disposed. However, Pujahari who was having a strong advocacy for the ‘salt therapy’ for cancer treatment, had withdrawn from surgical practice ahead of the government notice.
