Cuttack: Tension prevailed in Kajalpur village under Govindpur police limits in the district today morning after angry locals staged a road blockade over a youth’s brutal killing which took place last night.

Angry locals demanded Rs 50 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased identified as Kandura Bhoi, who happens to be a member of the Dalit community along with an Anganwadi job for his wife.

“A group of armed men barged into Kandura’s house in the wee hours of the night while he was sleeping. They dragged the victim out of home and brutally hacked him before his family members. The assailants were witnessed even passing casteist remarks. We demand stringent action against the accused as such type of incident is quite rare in the district,” said Abhimanyu Mallick, President, Yuva Dalit Sangh.

“My husband had no enmity with anybody. He was a nice man,” said the wife of the deceased Ranu Bala. “He succumbed to injuries after waiting for the 108 ambulance for around 2 hours,” she added.

The blockade brought traffic movement along Govindpur-Cuttack Road to a grinding halt for few hours during which a group of locals also attacked Govindpur Police Station OIC, who reached the village to restore law and order.

The blockade has been removed after assurance for action by the district administration later in the day.
