Villagers rescue elephant calf stuck in mud in Athagarh

Athagarh: Locals in Khamarnuagon village under Athagarh Forest Division rescued a baby elephant from a mud well under Khuntuni Forest Range this morning following a Herculean effort.

The rescued calf which is around 7-month-old was handed over to forest officials later in the day.

As per the report, the calf which is suspected to be a part of an elephant herd which had sneaked into the farmlands near the village last night had got it stuck in the mud well later. While the herd returned into forest after failed attempt to rescue the calf, some locals spotted it this morning after hearing the loud noise.

The villagers called up the forest officials after rescuing the calf from the mud on their own later in the day.

Hundreds of people thronged the village to take a glimpse of the calf.
