Villagers attack forest officials, ransack vehicles in Balasore

Balasore: Amidst growing incidents of elephant incursion in the state, a forest team faced public ire in the district last night after angry villagers thrashed them and vandalized their official vehicles over their failure.

The incident took place in Hatimunda village under Nilagiri Forest Range late in the night while the forest team was on its duty in the village. A group of villagers attacked them with cudgels and stones for not guarding their crop fields.

At least two Bolero vehicles used by the forest officials got damaged in the attack while they sustained minor injuries. Later the officials returned from the village.

Reacting to the attack, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Laxman Pradhan said, driving away of elephants in the village have been stopped in response to the incident and it would resume only after police action on guilty villagers.
