Bhubaneswar: Veteran Odia cine actress, producer and director Parbati Ghosh breathed her last after pro-longed illness here late on Sunday night. She was 85.
A national award winning actress, Ghosh was rushed to a city based private hospital after she complained of uneasiness. However she passed away while undergoing treatment.
Her brother and noted music director Swarup Nayak, producer Bapu Lenka and several Ollywood actors rushed to the hospital to pay last respects to the departed soul.
People from different walks of life including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled her death.
Taking to his Twitter handle Naveen said, “Deeply shocked at the passing away of veteran film personality Parvati Ghosh. She was an icon of women’s empowerment & one of the greatest gifts to Odia cinema. Her departure is a great loss to the film industry. My thoughts & prayers with the family. May her soul rest in peace.
The actress will be given a state funeral, the Chief Minister announces.
Her last rites will be performed after the arrival of her children who stay in the US.
Parbati who was born in 1933 at Manasinghpatana in Cuttack, had made a mark in her debut Odia film ‘Shri Jagannath’. Later, she successfully played several characters in films like Ámari Gaon Jhia, Bhai Bhai, Maa, Laxmi, Kaa, Stree, Sansar and many more.
Ghosh was conferred with the national film award for her stellar performance in Laxmi, Kaa and Stree. She was also conferred with the Jayadev Puraskar and Bioscope Award.
Her childhood name was as Chapala Nayak, however, she was later rechristened as Parbati Ghosh after she married producer-director Gauraprasad Ghosh.
