Puri: The District Collector and Asst. Chief Administrator of Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Samarth Verma informed that at least 135 new CCTVs will be installed on Srimandir premises in view of strengthening the current security system.

The decision has been taken after the vandalisation of chulhas at Puri Jagannath Temple.

The District Collector informed, in a meeting on Thursday, that the inoperative CCTVs will be soon repaired to restore the surveillance inside the temple premises. He added that elaborate arrangements would be made to facilitate the common darshan in the Jagannath temple. The meeting was held at the SJTA office involving Puri SP, SJTA administrators of safety, NITI and development, and members of the Jagannath Temple Management Committee.

Adding to it, regular security check-ups will be undertaken by the SJTA authority which will be reviewed in weekly meetings.

Verma also said that CCTV cameras would be installed at four different locations to keep surveillance on the Rosaghara (kitchen) which will have two months’ storage capacity.

Meanwhile, the JTP personnel, who were on duty on the night when the chulhas of the temple kitchen were vandalised, had been served a show-cause notice to which the reply has been received and an action would be taken after verification.

Notably, more than 60 Pithapuri, Kothabhoga, Satapuri and Thadapuri earthen ovens (chulhas) inside the Jagannath Temple’s kitchen (Rosaghara), were vandalised. The accused J Mohapatra (30), a resident of Khordha, confessed his crime. “He felt uneasy about something following which he vandalised the chulhas,” said Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh.
