Utkal Derailment: Probe report blames railway staff

6 killed, more than 40 injured as Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express derails in UPBhubaneswar: The preliminary report in the Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express derailment case of August 19 submitted by Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northern Circle on Tuesday categorically blamed the negligence of railway staff for the accident.

Submitting its initial findings of the probe to the railway department, Shailesh Kumar Pathak, Commissioner of Railway Safety mentioned the ‘Failure of Railway Staff’ and claimed that the mishap, which killed 23 people and left over 100 injured, could have been averted.

The provisional findings of the probe are being examined by the railway department.

Notably, the 18477 Kalinga Utkal Express derailed between Khatauli-Mansurpur stations of Delhi Saharanpur section under Northern Railway at around 5.45 pm on August 19. While 13 bogies of the train went off the tracks and the mishap reported heavy casualty, the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu attracted sharp criticism over the incident. The railway department terminated the services of 13 employees following the incident and ordered a high level probe into the mishap.
