Bhubaneswar: The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) hailed Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for his government’s proposal of 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the UN Women said, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support extended by your government in implementation of the joint programme between UN Women & the Panchayati Raj Department, Govt of Odisha to promote Gender Responsive Governance in the state.”

“We are pleased that the Government of Odisha has showcased leadership by proposing 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and the Assemblies,” the letter stated.

In November 2018, Odisha Assembly had adopted a unanimous resolution to provide for one-third reservation of women in Parliament as well as in State Legislative Assemblies.

On December 4 last year, Patnaik wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to initiate steps to ensure reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures.
