Two fishermen electrocuted to death in pond in Odisha

Kendrapara: In an unfortunate incident, two fishermen were electrocuted to death at Brahmapur village under Purushottampur Panchayat in Sadar police limits of the district this morning.

The deceased have been identified as Amarendra Pradhan of Brahmapur village and Gokul Dalei of Arakhya village. The duo died after coming in contact with a live wire fenced around a pond.

According to reports, one Mantu Pani had taken the pond on lease from Daitari Rout for fish farming. Pani had set up electric fencing in the pond to check stealing of fish from the pond. He had hired some villagers along with Amarendra and Gokul for fishing today. However, he forgot to disconnect electricity connection to the fence.

When Amarendra and Gokul got down into the pond along with others, they got electrocuted and died on the spot. Another person also sustained injuries when he attempted to save the duo while others managed to get out of the pond.

Locals protested the incident and demanded adequate compensation for the family members of the deceased fishermen.

On being informed, Kendrapara Sadar police rushed to the spot and started an investigation. A manhunt has also been launched by the cops to trace Mantu Pani, who absconded soon after the mishap.
