Two cyber criminals arrested, over 250 SIM cards seized in Cuttack

Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the Cuttack district Cyber Offence Police Station busted a cyber criminals’ gang and arrested two members today.

According to Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh, the Cyber Offence Police Station started an investigation after a man registered a complaint of cyber fraud on February 28.

In his complaint, the man said that he received a call from an unknown number saying him that his BSNL SIM card will get blocked if he does not recharge and download two apps TeamViewer and SMS Forwarding APP. As soon as he downloaded the apps, the cyber fraud got access to his mobile phone and looted around Rs 4 lakh from his bank account.

In course of the investigation, the Cyber Offence Police Station came to know that a big racket is running behind the cyber crime. Cops also learnt that some people are offering pre-activated SIM cards to cyber criminals who loot money from people’s bank accounts.

They usually make SIM cards in the name of some people and provide them to cyber fraudsters. They have been running the racket since 2017 and have made more than 15,000 SIM cards and provided them to the cyber fraudsters, informed the DCP adding that police have seized 242 pre-activated Jio SIM cards, 34 pre-activated BSNL SIM cards and 3 mobile phones from the accused persons.

The DCP further said that people from Bihar, West Bengal and other states used to purchase such SIM cards and use them for cyber criminal activities.

Police team is in search of the people who are involved in the racket.
