Dhenkanal: Timely step by locals prevented a truck load of cows from falling into the hands of slaughter houses in neighbouring states after they intercepted the vehicle at Mukundapur village near Joranda in the district on Thursday. They detained the helper of the truck and handed him over to police later.

The detained helper is yet to be identified.

The illegal cow transport came to fore after a group of residents in Mukundapur village intercepted a Tata lorry truck (Registration No. OD 06 D 9476) passing through the village in the morning over suspicious behaviour of the men boarding it.

After conducting a search in the vehicle they found at least 15 cows loaded in it under inhumane conditions. As the helper of the truck failed to give satisfying answer on the consignment, the villagers detained him for hours and roughed up.

He was later handed over to Joranda Police along with the truck.

Police is trying to trace the driver who managed to escape from the spot during the raid.
