Tractor with smuggled timber seized in Malkangiri, 3 held

Malkangiri: Launching a crackdown on illegal timber trade in the district, the forest officials last night seized a tractor which was carrying a consignment of sawn timbers and arrested three persons in connection with it in Salmi forest under Mathili Forest Range in Malkangiri district.

The arrested wood smugglers have been identified as Lakinath Nayak, Krutibas Gouda and Sukura Nayak of Palaripadar village and Shankar Kumar of Dalapatiguda village of the same district.

A five-member team of forest officials led by Mathili Forest Ranger Parsuram Bhumia took part in the raid which was conducted after a tip-off on the presence of a timber laden tractor bearing registration number OR 10 D 1493 near Salmi area at around 2 AM in the night. During the raid the officials found fine quality timbers in huge quantity kept in the vehicle and seized those after the driver and the helper failed to produce necessary documents.

The arrested accused trio has been forwarded to court of late.
