Tourism can help eradicate poverty: President

World Tourism DayNew Delhi : President Ram Nath Kovind said that greater tourism opportunities can help the country eradicate poverty and generate better employment opportunities, while speaking at a programme to mark the World Tourism Day here on Wednesday.

Kovind also presented the National Tourism Awards for the year 2015-16 to various groups in travel, tourism and hospitality segments.

“Tourism can also help improve economy of the country.  There are immense opportunities in sports and adventure tourism,” said the President.

“Every citizen should strive to provide a good experience to tourists at their own level”, Kovind said. “In a tourism conscious society, the role of the government is only to provide direction and a conducive environment”.

Kovind also launched Incredible India 2.0 campaign on the occasion of World Tourism Day. The campaign promotes different heritage sites and tourism destinations of India.

In addition, he launched “Adopt a Heritage Project”, which has great potential to make India’s rich and diverse heritage monuments, tourist-friendly.

The Minister of State for Tourism Alphons Kannanthanam and other senior officials of Tourism Ministry were present on the occasion.
