‘Titli’ Aftermath: 12 including 5 children killed in landslide in Gajapati

Paralakhemundi: In a shocking mishap related to cyclone ‘Titli’, at least 12 persons including five children were killed in a landslide near Baraghara Upar Sahi under Gangabada panchayat in Gajapati district last night.

The deceased have been identified as Gagan Jani, Dinesh Bhuyan, Gangadhar Behera, Mihakshi Sabar, Jayachandra Bhuyan, Champa Bhuyan, Somnath Jani, Sumitra Bhuyan, Dandapani Bhuyan, Srimati Jani, Lalu Behera and Jigyan Sabar.

As per the report, at least 16 persons of five families including women and children were taking shelter in a school building located adjacent to the Mahendragiri hill since the cyclone Titli’s landfall in Odisha on October 11. While the families successfully passed the cyclone, the heavy torrential rain which followed it last night reportedly take toll on them. A portion of the hill which had weakened due to rain caved in later in the night and fell on the school building.

As the school building collapsed under the impact of the landslide, 12 persons taking shelter inside it died on the spot.

Garabandha Police has reached the spot and rescued 12 bodies trapped under the debris whereas 4 others are still missing.

Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi has confirmed the news. He assured that Gajapati SP and Collector will visit the spot soon.
