Tiger census begins in Similipal National Park from today

Mayurbhanj: Fresh tiger census has begun in the Tiger Reserve of Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha from November 26.

Reportedly, the tiger census in Similipal will be conducted using camera trapping and other latest technologies. More than 500 CCTVs have been installed at different places of the national park. It will be done in four stages.

The counting will continue for next seven days for which the Forest officials of Karanjia Forest Division have been trained by the Deputy Director of Similipal Tiger Reserve. He had visited the Megha Nursery in Banasahi area.

Also, training was provided over use of digital Applications in a training session at the office of the Karanjia Forest Division today.

It is noteworthy of that the tiger census is done once in every four years.

As per the 2016 tiger census report, a total of 40 tigers – 13 males, 24 females and three cubs were found in Odisha. Among them the Simlipal Tiger Reserve (STR) had the highest count with 26 tigers. Four tigers were spotted at the Sunabeda Tiger Reserve while three tigers each were spotted in Karanjia and Keonjhar wildlife divisions. Two tigers each were spotted in Satkosia and Sundergarh wildlife divisions while one tiger was spotted at the Khariar Division.
