Puri/Kendrapara: Tension erupted at the SCS College in Puri and Derabish Mahavidyalaya in Kendrapara on Monday following rejection of nominations of some candidates for the students’ union election scheduled to be held on September 23.
Hundreds of students in Puri SCS College demonstrated before the main gate of the college this morning after nominations of 19 candidates, including four presidential aspirants, were rejected by the college authorities after scrutiny. The agitating students sought an answer from the college principal on the rejection and tried to know the ground under which the decision had been taken. While the principal did not turn up despite repeated appeals, the agitators barged into the campus breaking open the main gate and ransacked the infrastructure inside. Later, they blocked the road in front of the college gate by placing burning tyres on it.
The situation was brought under control after Puri Additional SP and City DSP, along with IICs of four police station areas, rushed to the spot and detained a group of students later in the day. Four platoons of police force have been deployed inside the campus following the incident.
Similarly, Derabish Mahavidyalaya witnessed violent protests by students, who objected to the college authorities’ decision to cancel nominations of four out of the six presidential aspirants contesting in the students’ union poll. Angry students tried to torch the classrooms by sprinkling petrol. Police took four students into custody following the incident.
“Tension erupted in the campus after nominations of four presidential aspirants were cancelled under Lyngdoh Committee guidelines for failing to have required amount of attendance. The students tried to check the attendance register, but I did not allow them to do so and advised them to approach the grievance cell of the college instead,” said principal of the college Rekha Debi.
