Phulbani: Tension ran high at Gocchapada Police Station in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Monday following the death of an undertrial prisoner. The deceased undertrial prisoner has been identified as Mrutyunjaya Kanhar.
According to reports, Mrutyunjaya Kanhar was lodged at Phulbani District Jail following his arrest in a drug-related case in November last year.
The jail authorities admitted Kanhar to the district headquarters hospital in Phulbani after he was taken ill on March 16 this year. Later, he was shifted to MKCG Medical College & Hospital in Berhampur as his condition deteriorated further.
Unfortunately, Kanhar breathed his last yesterday while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Alleging medical negligence and demanding compensation for his death, Kanhar’s family members along with some villagers staged a demonstration by placing his body in front of Gocchapada Police Station today.
Later, they called off their aggregation following the intervention of Phiringia BDO, Phubani SDPO, Kandhamal SP and Phulbani MLA.
