Tension in Odisha Hospital as doctor declares live patient dead

Bhadrak: A palpable tension prevailed in the District Headquarter Hospital (DHH) here early this morning after a doctor declared a live patient dead.

According to reports, one Sujit Khatua of Khatuapatna village was rushed to Dhusuri hospital by his relatives after he became unconscious all of a sudden. He was referred to the District Headquarter Hospital for better treatment. Unfortunately, Doctor Karunakara Rout who was in the night shift and attended Sujit in the hospital wrote in the prescription that the patient is dead.

Irate over Rout’s declaration, Sujit’s kin had a heated argument with him.

“Around 4.15 am we brought my bother to the hospital after he lost his sense frequently. However, nobody was here except the attendant. Doctor Karunakara Rout came to the hospital after the attendant called him. The Doctor was in a sleepy mood while inspecting my brother. Without checking properly, he declared my brother dead. He even, in the prescription, wrote for his postmortem,” said Satyajit Khatua, brother of Sujit.

“When we asked him to check properly, the doctor argued with us. Later, when another staff of the hospital convinced him of his fault, Doctor Karunakara Rout tried to tear the prescription,” he added saying “Now my brother has got his sense back and is he is fine.”

On being informed about the matter, Dhusuri police rushed to the hospital and took control over the situation. Besides, it started an investigation into the matter.
