Tension in Mayurbhanj village after labourer’s death in accident

Baripada: Tension prevailed in Sapanchua village under Khunta police limits in the district on Monday after a stone crusher unit labourer died after coming under the wheels of a Jeep Commander and locals staged a road blockade protesting the mishap.

The mishap took place at the crusher unit in the noon while labourers were on duty. Driver of the Commander reportedly lost control over the wheels and ended up mowing down the victim identified as Bikartan Nayak (50) of the same village.

Hundreds of locals including women and children raided the crusher unit immediately after the incident. They later thrashed the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident mercilessly by tying him up to a poll inside the unit.

Angry locals also staged a road blockade on Purunapani-Subarnamanjari Road demanding immediate closure of the crusher unit which they claimed is operating in the village without a license.

The blockaders are demanding a suitable compensation for the deceased who is survived by two minor son and daughters.

Khunta Police had reached the spot and was trying to pacify the angry mob till this report was being filed.
