Cuttack: Tension prevailed at Paikarapur village under Choudwar police limits after the police and Childline foiled a child marriage. The villagers allegedly abused and manhandled the Childline officials and police.
Police said that acting on a tip-off, Choudwar Police along with Childline officials reached a temple and rescued the 16-year-old minor girl. However, the villagers blocked the police van and manhandled the cops. The mob of 500 villagers also forcefully took away the girl and solemnized the marriage.
“They abused us and kept hostage for around two hours. They also took away our mobile phones and manhandled police as well. We demand the police to take stringent action against villagers,” demanded Jitendra Sahu, a social activist who was also present on the spot.
