Sundergarh: Tension prevailed in Jarmal village under Dharuadihi police limits of the district yesterday after a person, who was engaged by the Western Electricity Supply Company Limited (WESCO) to repair a transformer, died of electrocution.
The deceased has been identified as Naveen, a contractual employee of WESCO.
The mishap took place while the transformer repairing work was underway in the village and Naveen was on duty. One Junior Engineer (JE) of the department mistakenly switched on the power supply while the victim was still atop the transformer, following which Naveen died on the spot.
Hundreds of villagers led by electricians and workers association held a sit-in protest before Sudergarh DHH following the mishap and demanded Rs 15 lakh compensation to the kin of the victim. Besides, they sought a job for one of the family members of the deceased electrician. Moreover, they also demanded immediate suspension of the accused JE.
Meanwhile, local police have reached the village and are trying to pacify the angry residents.
