Suspected Maoists loot cash, medicine from ‘Mahaprayan’ hearse van in Ganjam

Bhanjanagar: Unleashing Red fear in Ganjam district last night, suspected members of CPI (Maoist) group snatched away cash and medicines from a ‘Mahaprayan’ hearse van near Ranikiari village under Gallery Police Out Post here last night.

The incident took place at around 7.30 pm in the night while the hearse van was returning from Gallery after handing over a dead body to a family. On its way to Bhanjanagar Sub Divisional Hospital, at least six armed members intercepted the van and snatched away cash from the staff boarding it.

“The looters’ group comprising of 2 women and 4 men, all carrying air bags and guns, also snatched away medicines available in the van and threatened us of dire consequences if we inform the matter to others. From their communication they members of the gang appeared to be non-Odias,” informed the driver of the van.

Police have reached the spot and started investigation into the incident.

Notably, this is not for the first time that Maoists have made their presence felt in the area. In 2008 the Red rebels on their way back from Nayagarh armoury loot had blown away the Gallery Out Post.
