Gandhinagar: In the latest development to the ghastly rape and murder of the minor girl who was found dead in Surat earlier this month, Gujarat Home Minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja today said that the deceased 11-year-old girl is suspected to be the native of Odisha.

“Police has not got the exact information of the 11-year-old rape victim’s family. We got posters printed and now suspect that she was from Odisha. We contacted Odisha DGP, checked photos of more than 8,000 missing children,” said Jadeja while speaking to the reporters.

“Gujarat police along with the Crime Branch has taken the case very seriously and will ensure justice for the girl,” he added.

Meanwhile, Odisha police DGP RP Sharma informed that his Gujarat counterpart informed him about the matter yesterday over the phone.

Sharma also said that photos and all available details of the deceased girl has been sent to all the Superintendent of Police (SPs) of the state to identify the victim.

Notably, Surat city police yesterday, based on her postmortem report, confirmed that the girl was kept confined for eight to ten days, repeatedly tortured and sexually assaulted.

The victim’s brutalised body with 86 injury marks was found by a passerby lying in bushes in Surat’s Bhestan locality on April 6.

The incident comes at a time when the nation is witnessing widespread protests against the government’s alleged inaction in the rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district.
