Subarnapur Villagers Come Up With Innovative Solution To Address Water Crisis

Subarnapur: With the summer season at its peak, temperatures are soaring across the state- leading to drying up of rivers and water bodies as well as triggering acute water scarcity in several areas in the district.

To address this grave issue, the people of Manikpur village in Subarnapur district of Odisha have come up with an innovative solution.

In all the three blocks that constitute the village, there are only five tube wells out of which three have ceased to function. Left with no other option, the villagers are drawing water from the remaining two tubewells.

However, the water being drawn is not sufficient to cater to the need of the entire village. It was at this juncture that the villagers thought of an innovative way to tackle this problem.

A number of pits were dug up all across the village to store water, which was to be later used for domestic purposes like drinking, bathing, washing clothes, etc. This has solved the problem of water scarcity in the area to a large extent.

Moreover, the villagers have alleged that despite the various government schemes to conserve water, not much has been done by officials on the ground. They have claimed that block officials have been informed umpteen number of times about water crisis in the village but all pleas fell into deaf ears and nothing was done.

The Government had launched a scheme in 2012 for providing drinking water to every village through effective conservation and storage. However, due to the snail-pace of activities, the completion of the project is yet to see the light of the day. The hand-pumps in the village have fallen into disrepair and people are walking as many as 4 kilometres to fetch a pail of water.

On the other hand, Block officials have said pleas regarding water issue were received and efforts are underway to provide clean drinking water to the villagers. They have also assured to make necessary arrangements to provide water to the villagers at the earliest.
