Subarnapur: Locals stage blockade on Mahanadi Bridge after death of Constable in road accident

Subarnapur: Hundreds of locals on Wednesday staged blockade on Mahanadi Bridge here in Odisha after the death of an Excise constable in a road accident.

Vehicular traffic on the bridge was disrupted as hundreds of vehicle was left stranded both sides of the road.

The protestors demanded adequate compensation to the kin of the deceased and stringent action against concerned engineer and the contractor for their laxity in the repair work of the bridge.

According reports, the Excise constable, identified as Nandi Karmi , a resident of Jatesingha village of the area, was crushed to death by an unidentified vehicle on the river bridge late last night.

As the news about Karmi’s death spread, the locals gathered at the accident site this morning and staged road blockade keeping the body on the bridge.

They started shouting slogans against the government and concerned contactor alleging improper way of storing cog aggregates and other construction materials on the bridge.

After hours of blockade, the protestors cleared the bridge only when senior police and administration officials assured them for taking an appropriate action in the case.
