Stephen Hawking passes away at 76

Cambridge: British scientist Stephen Hawking passed away at his home here in England on Wednesday morning, his family informed. He was 76.

The scientist is survived by wife, Lucy, and two sons, Robert and Tim.

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years,” the family said in a statement.

The award-winning theoretical physicist was known for his groundbreaking work with black holes and relativity. He was author of several popular science books including ‘A Brief History of Time’, which has sold more than 10 million copies.

Hawking was born in Oxford on 8 January 1942. His father, a research biologist, had moved with his mother from London to escape German bombing. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1962.

His life story was the subject of the 2014 film ‘The Theory of Everything’, starring Eddie Redmayne.
