MaoistBalangir: A Special Operation Group (SOG) jawan sustained critical injury in the police-Maoist gun battle in Turekela-Mahakhanda forest in the district last night.

The injured jawan has been identified as Chandrabhanu Bhoi.

The encounter erupted in the Mahakhand Forest located in the vicinity of Kantabanji area, while a team of SOG jawans were on their way back from combing operation. A group of Maoists ambushed the jawans with automatic rifles and other sophisticated weapons. The jawans retaliated, but Chandrabhanu sustained a bullet injury on his stomach during the firing. Later on,  the ultras escaped from the spot.

The injured jawan was rushed to Balangir District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition. He could be airlifted to Vishakhapatnam later in the day, said hospital sources.

Informing on the health condition of the injured jawan, Dr Satyajeet Joshi of Balangir DHH said the bullet has been successfully operated out of his stomach. However, he said that the decision to shift him to Vishakhapatnam could be taken, over the growing need of various other medical examinations to ensure that there is no internal injury.

Meanwhile, Balangir Collector Ashish Thakre and I.G. of Police Northern Region Sushant Nath have reached the area to take stock of the situation.

Notably, Maoists torched at least 10 vehicles raiding a road construction camp at Kalyansinghpur in Rayagada district yesterday and left posters behind, issuing warning against the project.
