Shooter Manu Bhaker wins gold, Heena Sidhu bags silver in Gold Coast CWG

Gold Coast (Australia): India’s 16-year-old Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu won gold and silver respectively in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Sunday.

Bhaker produced a spectacular performance, setting a new CWG record with a total of 240.9 points in the final round. While Heena registered 234 to make it 1-2 for India at the top of the podium, Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch took bronze with 214.9 points.

Shooter Ravi Kumar also bagged a bronze medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle final by scoring a total of 224.1 points. Prior to him Punam Yadav clinched a gold medal in the women’s 69 kg weightlifting event.

The 22-year-old from Varanasi lifted 100 kg in snatch and 122 kg in the clean and jerk category to finish with a total of 222 kg to make the country proud.

Weightlifter Vikas Thakur also pocketed the bronze in Men’s 94kg final.

At present, India’s medal tally reads six gold, two silver and three bronze. India currently ranks third in the medal tally while Australia and England are leading with 61 and 34 medals respectively.

On the other hand, India staged a late comeback to stun England 2-1 in a Pool A match of the women’s hockey competition.

Likewise, five-time world champion MC Mary Kom assured herself of a medal on debut at the Commonwealth Games by beating Scotland’s Megan Gordon and advancing to the semifinal on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Olympic bronze-medallist quite literally sailed past Gordon to make the last-four stage with a 5-0 win. Her win assured the Indian boxing contingent of its first CWG medal.

Mary Kom, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, will face Sri Lanka’s Anusha Dilrukshi in the semi-final on 11 April.
