Severe Cyclone Asani weakens into cyclonic storm

Bhubaneswar: The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Asani’ over the west-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph and weakened into a Cyclonic Storm, informed the India Meteorological Department on Wednesday.

It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards for the next few hours and reach West-central Bay of Bengal close to Andhra Pradesh coast. Thereafter, it is very likely to re-curve slowly north-northeastwards, and move along Machilipatnam, Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada, Tuni and Visakhapatnam coasts, added IMD.

The weather department also added that the system will emerge into the west-central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coasts by May 11 evening. Thereafter it is likely to move northeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to weaken gradually into a depression by May 12 morning.

The cyclonic storm is under the continuous surveillance of Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), said reports.

Adding to it, a yellow warning has been issued to Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri Khordha, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack districts as heavy rainfall (7-11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places from 8.30 am of May 11 up to 8.30 am of May 12.

Similarly, a yellow warning has also been issued to Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore districts as heavy rainfall (7-11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places from 8.30 am of May 12 up to 8.30 am of May 13.
