Severe cyclone Asani moving at a speed of 12km/hr, Likely to weaken in next 24 hours

Bhubaneswar: The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Asani’ over Westcentral and adjoining the southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours, informed Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

The system lay centered, at 2.30 am on May 10, over west-central and adjoining the southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 84.2°E, 330 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 350 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 510 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 590 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha).

It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards till 10th May night and reach West-central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining Odisha coast.

Thereafter, it is very likely to re-curve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.

Notably, it is likely to weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during the next 24 hours.

Rainfall Forecast and Warnings:

  • From 8.30 am of May 10 to 8.30 am of May 11- A yellow warning has been issued as heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri.
  • From 8.30 am of May 11 to 8.30 am of May 12- A yellow warning has been issued as heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Khorda,Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.
  • From 8.30 am of May 12 to 8.30 am of May 13- A yellow warning has been issued as heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore.

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off Odisha coast on 11th and 12th May,2022. Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea area over west central Bay of Bengal and Northwest Bay of Bengal till 12th May,2022.
