Severe Cyclone Asani 740 km away from Puri, Likely to weaken tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: Severe Cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over Southeast Bay of Bengal moved during past few hours and lay centered about 740 km north-northeast of Puri, informed the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre on Monday.

Reportedly, the system is moving with a speed of 21 km/hr which is likely to weaken tomorrow ( May 10) following which it will gradually move towards the Andra- Odisha coast.

However, the severe cyclone Asani is less likely to make a landfall in Odisha.

Adding to it, the wind direction will change its path during this time and on May 12 it will pass parallel to the sea about 88 km from Puri.

As a result, there will be spells of rain along with strong winds in some coastal areas on May 11 and May 12. The six coastal districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall.

It is to be noted that all the ports in Odisha have been issued danger signal 2.

It is to be noted that the cyclonic storm Asani over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday evening. Asani, which means wrath in Sinhala, is the first cyclone of 2022 over the Bay of Bengal and is likely to miss the Andhra-Odisha coast by 100 km on May 11, said sources.

Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena has said that the district collectors and municipal commissioners have been asked to make a decision on evacuation, as and when necessary.

He also said that although Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur districts will witness rainfall between May 10 and 12, a danger of flooding is likely in the above stated places.

Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force teams have been deployed in Ganjam, Puri, Satpada, Astaranga, Krushnaprasad, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Mahakalpara and Rajnagar. A full unit of NDRF has also been deployed at Balasore.

Besides, the DG of Fire Service instructed teams in all districts to be alert and ready to act in case of any eventuality.

All fishermen have returned from the sea as from today the boat movement in Chilika lake have been stopped till the cyclone passes.
