Section 144 invoked outside Vedanta Alumina plant after undertrial’s death at VIMSAR

Bhawanipatna: An undertrial prisoner who was cooling his heels behind the bars at Bhawanipatna Jail after being arrested in connection with the March 18 protest at Lanjigarh Vedanta Aluminium plant died under treatment at VIMSAR Hospital in Burla last night.

The deceased identified as Patnaik Harijan who happens to be one among the 28 other arrestees in the incident had been rushed to the hospital after being detected with a kidney-related ailment a few days back.

In a precautionary measure post the death of the undertrial, the Kalahandi district administration invoke Section 144 of the CrPC near the plant up to 2 kilometres to prevent any kind of disturbances.

Meanwhile, the administration is holding talks with the family of the deceased and they are demanding Rs 5 lakh compensation and job for a member.

Notably, on March 18 a bloody clash erupted between the agitating workers of Lanjigarh Vedanta Aluminium plant and security personnel. Later, police arrested 29 persons including Harijan on the basis of the CCTV footage available at the plant.
