Bhanjanagar: In its second encounter within 24 hours, Ganjam Police held notorious criminal Babu Nayak along with an aide by conducting a raid near Jhadabhumi under Jagannath Prasad police limits today.

The aide of the criminal has been identified as Tapan Jena, informed Bhanjanagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Dash.

As per the report, a joint team of Jagannath Prasad and Bhanjanagar Police took part in the raid after getting a tip-off on the presence Babu and Tapan in Jhadabhumi area this afternoon. During the raid, Babu opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape. However, both the criminals sustained bullet injuries in their legs in the return fire by police.

They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital after arrest due to deteriorating condition.

Notably, Babu who has over 40 cases pending against him under different police stations in Ganjam and Nayagarh districts had escaped from MKCG Medical in Berhampur, where he was under treatment on November 25. Since then he remained at large.

Babu came in the clutches of Bhanjanagar Police on August 3, 2017. However, after cooling his heels behind the bars for almost a year, he managed to escape from Bhanjanagar Sub-Jail on September 11, 2018. At that time Odisha Police had transferred the Jailor and put two jail staff under suspension.

The police managed to nab  Babu again on October 10, the same year and put him behind the bars.

However, he managed to fool the cops again on November 25 and escaped from MKCG Medical, where he was under treatment.

At least four Constables and one Havildar had been put under suspension by  Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijesh Rai after the second  successful escape bid of the wanted criminal.
