School Girl Baby Delivery: 12-hour Kandhamal bandh cripples life

Phulbani: Normal life came to a standstill across Kandhamal district today following a dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by a local group, Kandhamal Surakshya Abhiyan (KSA) and supported by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) over a seven point charter of demand protesting Daringbadi minor girl child delivery case.

While shops and other business establishments downed their shutter during the bandh which started at 6 am in the morning and would continue till 6 pm, schools and colleges also remained closed.

Vehicular movement on roads were also disrupted in the district during the bandh which witnessed picketing by both KSA and BJP workers at several places along with road blockades stage by burning tyres.

The demand of the strikers include, ouster of Odisha SC and ST Development Minister Ramesh Majhi along with Social Security Ministers Prafulla Samal,  transfer of Kandhamal Collector, judicial probe into the incident, suspension of the District Child Welfare Officer, compensation of Rs 50 lakh and victim’s safety.

Notably, the 14-year-old Class VIII student of a tribal residential school gave birth to a baby girl inside the bathroom on her hostel on January 13. She was later rushed to MKCG Medical in Berhampur where the newborn died the next day.
