Cuttack: The Special Vigilance court on Saturday allowed the Vigilance sleuths to take SCB Medical College and Hospital’s Clinical Haematology Department head Dr Rabindra Kumar Jena on a two-day remand.

The anti-corruption agency had sought for a five-day remand of Jena who was arrested on charges of amassing properties disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The vigilance officials had arrested Jena from Odisha-West Bengal border while he was returning from Kolkata in a car on December 20. He was produced before the Special Vigilance court which sent the tainted doctor to judicial custody till January 3 after rejecting his bail plea.

The court is slated to conduct hearing on Jena’s bail petition on December 27.

Jena, the main accused in Odisha State Treatment Fund (OSTF) scam, generated huge amount of money by availing junkets from pharmaceutical companies. He is also accused of showing undue favour to those companies by prescribing costly drugs to patients causing loss to state government.

Acting on a tip off, Vigilance had conducted raids on his residence on November 22 and traced disproportionate assets worth Rs 4 crore. Later, the doctor had applied for interim bail which was rejected by Orissa High Court following which he had gone absconding.
