SC postpones hearing in Abhijit Iyer anti-Sun temple remark case

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The Supreme Court today postponed the hearing against Abhijit Iyear Mitra, a self-proclaimed journalist and a friend of former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda, in the anti-Sun temple remark case.

The case filed by one Bimbadhar Beura and earlier scheduled for the hearing today, was removed from the updated list of the apex court. It was to be heard by a three-member bench comprising of CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and A M Khanwilkar.

Notably, Abhijit who had been granted an interim relief in the case till September 28 got it extended by the apex court till October 5 at a later stage. Not only that, while extending the bail  the court also ordered the Odisha Police to make necessary security arrangement for Abhijit’s appearance in Orissa High Court, if he wants so.

Abhijit was arrested by Odisha Police from Nizamuddin area on September 20 after videos showcasing his derogatory remarks on Konark Sun Temple and Lord Jagannath surfaced on internet causing widespread resentment among Odias. He was granted bail by Saket Court on the same day which disallowed Odisha Police to take him on remand.

While the Saket Court ordered Abhijit to appear at the Konark Police Station in the case on September 28, he skipped it following the extension in the interim bail.

The apex court will pronounce its decision on Abhijit’s appearance at the Konark Police Station on October 6.
