Sura BabaBhubaneswar: The Supreme Court today granted bail to self-styled godman Sura Baba alias Surendranath Mishra in a land fraud case lodged against him by a disciple from Chhatrapur area in Ganjam district.

Hearing a bail petition moved by Surendra after Odisha High Court rejected it in August this year, the apex court allowed his release said Ashok Panigrahy, the controversial godman’s counsel.

Notably, Surendra’s bail petition had been rejected by the Odisha High Court in two earlier occasions, the last being on August 3. At that time, Justice AK Sahoo found him liable for orchestrating attempts to tamper with evidences and filing false affidavits from inside the jail.

Surendra was arrested on August 31, 2015 from Trahi Achyuta ashram, a sprawling 14-acre property at Jhinti Sasan in Khurda district for allegedly indulging in various illegal activities including encroachment of government lands and sexually exploiting women followers. Since then he is cooling his heels behind the bars.
