A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra also passed a slew of directions to provide “preventive, remedial and punitive measures” to deal with offences like mob violence and cow vigilantism.

The Bench, which also comprised justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, held that it was the obligation of the State to protect citizens and ensure that the “pluralistic social fabric” of the country holds against mob violence.
