Sathish Kumar gives India 3rd gold in CWG-2018

Gold Coast (Australia): The gold medal tally of India in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games climbed to three with yet another weightlifter – veteran Sathish Kumar Sivalingam bagging the gold in the men’s 77 kg event here on Saturday.

Sathish Kumar registered a total of 317 kg which included 144 kg in snatch and 173 kg in clean and jerk. Jack Oliver of England pocketed the silver with a total of 312 kg while Francois Etoundi ensured bronze for hosts Australia with 305 kg.

Earlier, weightlifters Sanjita Chanu and Mirabai Chanu had won gold for India.

P. Gururaja had opened India’s medal account on the first day of the 21st Commonwealth Games. He had claimed silver in the men’s 56kg category on Thursday.

Likewise, Deepak Lather of Shadipur in Haryana on Friday became the youngest Indian weightlifter to claim a Commonwealth Games medal. He clinched a bronze in the men’s 69kg category.

Today, Indian athletes will be in action in weightlifting, boxing, badminton, table tennis, squash, cycling, hockey, basketball and lawn bowls.

As many as 220-strong contingent have been sent by India to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
