Sambalpur: People were left in a state of panic in several villages located downstream Sasan Canal of Hirakud dam after one of its retaining wall developed a 30-feet breach on Friday.

The breach which occurred early in the morning left acres of farmland in villages like Paramanpur, Tabala, Maneswar and Pandri submerged under water which resulted in paddy crop damage.

Additional District Collector of Sambalpur Pradeep Sahu along with Irrigation Department and Hirakud dam officials have visited the spot and ordered for repairing of the breach on war footing basis.

While the locals have blamed district administration’s apathy towards the canal’s maintenance, the Assistant Engineer of Irrigation Department Jishukrishna Bariha have ruled it out. He even insisted that no farm land has been affected so far by the breach.
