Sarpanch With Collector’s Power Attacked In Odisha

Cuttack: In its bid to effectively implement Coronavirus guidelines at Panchayats level, Odisha government has delegated each sarpanch of the State with the “collectors’ power” within their jurisdiction in accordance with the provision of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 and Odisha Covid-19 regulation. However, sarpanch of Bhiruda gram panchayat in Cuttack district was attacked by miscreants on Sunday.

Two miscreants reportedly barged into the gram panchayat’s office and allegedly attacked the Sarpanch for not helping them to obtain ration cards. Besides, the damaged the chairs and tables kept inside the panchayat office.

This apart, the miscreants also destroyed the food which was prepared for the inmates of the COVID-19 quarantine centre.

As tension prevailed in the area following the incident, Tigiria Police rushed to the spot and detained the accused.

Police also have started an investigation into the matter.
