Saina Salonika bags 2 team gold medals in Asian Chess Championship

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Saina Salonika has bagged two team gold medals in the Asian Youth Standard Chess Championship and Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championship. The championships were held in Chiangmai of Thailand between April 1 and 9.

Saina with (6 points), Sanjana Raghunath (4.5 points) and Tejaswi M (4 points) pocketed the team gold medal for India surpassing Vietnam in the Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championship.

Likewise, Saina (6.5 points) along with Makhija Ashna (6.5 points) and Sanskrit Goal (5 points) won the team gold medal in the Asian Youth Standard Chess Championship in the Under 16 girl category. However, she missed medal in the Standard Chess event by a whisker with 6.5 points and finished 4th.

Earlier Saina, a class-X student of the KIIT International School, had got individual gold in the Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championship in the U-16 Girl category by scoring six points out of seven rounds.

With these two team gold and an individual medal, the ace chess player of the state and winner of National Child Award for exceptional achievements from the President of India in 2014, increased her international medals tally to 15.
