Road accidents claim 12 lives every day in Odisha: Minister

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister Nrusingha Charan Sahu on Friday told the Assembly that on an average of 12 people are killed every day in road accidents in the state.

Replying to a question of BJP MLA Dillip Ray, the Minister said, as many as 43,312 people have lost their lives and 61,884 seriously injured in road accidents in the state from 2008 to 2018.

The Minister further said, the State Transport Department successfully cracked down on reckless drivers in the State.

Sau said the driving license of 82,762 people has been cancelled for reckless driving and driving vehicles without licence.

The transport authorities have collected a fine of more than Rs 1.5 crore for driving without license and more than Rs 2 crore for reckless driving during last 10 years, he added.
