Rescued elephant calf dies in Athagarh, medical negligence alleged

Athagarh: The sick baby elephant rescued from Khuntuni Forest Range under Athagarh area in Cuttack district last Thursday died due to alleged medical negligence last night.

As per the forest department sources, the sick calf which was around seven-month-old died due to loose motion and high fever under treatment. It had been admitted to the local veterinary hospital here.

The condition of the calf kept on deteriorating since its rescue due to unavailability of proper medical care at the local veterinary hospital which drew flak. Several media reports also highlighted the issue since last week and demanded proper medical care for the animal.

Notably, locals in Khamarnuagon village had rescued the calf from a mud well under Khuntuni Forest Range following a Herculean effort on August 16. It is suspected that the calf had been separated from a herd which sneaked into the area the previous night.
