Renowned Odissi dancer Minati Mishra passes away at 91

Bhubaneswar: Renowned Odissi dancer and actor Padma Shri Minati Mishra passed away in Switzerland on Monday. She was 91.

Late Mishra, a disciple of Kabichandra Kalicharan Patnayak, a known Odissi dancer, had learnt dance from a very early age and went on winning several accolades later which includes, 1975 Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalinga Shastriya Sangeet Parishad Award and Sangeet Prabhakar title for Hindustani vocal music.

Born to Basanta Kumar Das in 1929 in Cuttack, Late Mishra got the opportunity to dance extensively in foreign countries including Europe.

After obtaining a Ph.D on the Natya- Sastra from Phillips University, Germany late Mishra took part in a number of dance festivals, lecture tours and workshops in India, Switzerland and Canada. Later she settled in Switzerland.

In her career as an actress, the doyen had acted in five Odia movies for which she will be remembered forever.

People from all walks of life have expressed their condolence on late Mishra’s death.
