Rasagolla Battle: Show-cause Notice to West Bengal

Bhubaneswar/ Chennai: Amidst the bitter battle between Odisha and West Bengal over GI status to Rasagolla, The Geographical Indication (GI) Registry office on Friday served a show-cause notice to the latter asking why the GI tag given to ‘Banglar Rasogolla’ will not be withdrawn.

The show cause notice has been issued to the West Bengal State Food Processing & Horticulture Development Corporation after the Chairman of the Regional Development Trust Ramesh Chandra Sahoo filed an application demanding cancellation of GI tag to Banglar Rasogolla (Rasogolla of West Bengal).

In its complaints, the Bhubaneswar-based Trust alleged that West Bengal had received the GI status for ‘Banglar Rasogolla’ from GI Registry office by submitting false evidence and data.

In February this year, the Government of Odisha had applied for the GI tag for ‘Odishara Rasagolla’ (Rasagolla of Odisha).

“Rasagolla originated in Odisha and is offered at Jagannath Temple as part of religious rituals by people of the state since the 12th century”, the State Government had mentioned in its claim to the GI Registry adding “Rasagolla was mentioned in a 16th century Odia epic, Dandi Ramayana.”
