Rain Lashes Bhubaneswar, Brings Much-awaited Relief For Citizens

Bhubaneswar: Denizens heaved a sigh of relief as a short-spell rain triggered by Kalabaisakhi lashed the city on Tuesday afternoon after four days of sweltering heat.

The rain lashed today in the city after a day when the mercury crossed 42.2 degrees Celsius. The storm which began around 4 PM, lasted for about 30 minutes.

At least 10 agitating teachers were injured after a tree got uprooted due to strong winds at Lower PMG of the city. Trees were also seen uprooted in several other places of the city; water-logging at low lying areas of Acharya Vihar, Nayapalli, Baramunda also caused traffic jam with snapped power lines adding to the woes.

Officials of the fire department and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been roped-in to clear the uprooted trees.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Department at Bhubaneswar has issued thunderstorm alert for six districts – Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Dhenkanal, Ganjam and Keonjhar till 8.30 PM today.

However, earlier today, Sky Met Weather had stated that winds are expected to become southerly after June 22 and there are chances of a system emerging in the North Bay of Bengal as a cyclonic circulation and having the potential of becoming an inset low pressure. This system is expected to bring rains to Coastal Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar as well as East Uttar Pradesh.
