sandCuttack: In a major success in its drive against the sand mafia, the Cuttack district administration seized around 42 wagon-loads of sand from a goods train at the Nirgundi Station here on Friday. The sand was being transported to Uttar Pradesh illegally.

The raid was conducted after Tangi-Choudwar Tehsildar Abinash Rout got a tip-off on a private party stocking sand in bulk at the Nirgundi Station on Friday afternoon. He immediately sent some staffs and checked it out at the railway station. Finding the information to be true, the Tehsildar called up Choudwar SDPO later in the day and conducted a raid at the railway station in the evening to seize around 42 wagons of sand.

“I got a tip-off on the illegal sand transportation at the Nirgundi Station yesterday at around 2 pm and checked the matter out immediately by sending some staffs. As the information came out to be true, I informed the matter to the Cuttack Collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra and conducted a raid at the railway station with the help of the Choudwar SDPO in the evening the same day,” said Rout.

“Around 3800 MT of sand was seized during the raid after the party in transorting the sand failed to produce necessary transport documents. The sand had been lifted from the CDA Sector 11 and was being sent to Uttar Pradesh,” he added.

On the other hand, the district collector who reached the spot soon after the raid has claimed that no permission had been granted to any party to lift sand from the Sector 11 area and the role of a racket is under investigation.

However, Sanjay Prashant, an official of the party involved in sand transportation, has claimed that his company had taken a lease for the transportation and the confusion arose only due to the non-availability of the necessary documents with him during the transportation. The problem would be sorted out soon, he added.
