Quit India Movement Anniv: Odisha govt to set up 42-ft tall Martyrs’ Column

Bhubaneswar: In memory of heroes of freedom struggle, Odisha government is setting up a 42-feet tall Martyrs’ Column. This was informed by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the occasion of 76th anniversary of Quit India movement here today.

The Martyrs’ Column will be erected at Freedom Fighters Ground in the state capital city.

Special prayer was held on the spot today after offering soils which were brought from different Martyrs’ Columns across the state.

“Our freedom is a great inspiration for the people across the globe. People from different walks of life had participated in it and made sacrifices for the emancipation of our motherland. I am glad that the Martyrs’ Column is going to be erected here in memory of heroes of the freedom struggle. I pin my respectful homage to our martyrs on this occasion and hope it will be a pillar of inspirations for youngsters towards dedication for the unit and integrity of our country.

This apart, the CM took to his twitter handle to pay his tributes to the freedom-fighters on the occasion of Quit India movement.

“Tribute to the indomitable spirit of our freedom fighters and their march for freedom in the face of greatest of adversities & oppression. #QuitIndiaMovement #JaiHind,” he tweeted.

Likewise, Odisha PCC President Niranjan Patnaik also paid his tributes to the freedom-fighters. Along with the Sevadal and other party cadres he took out a walk from Kalpana Square to the Congress Bhawan as a mark of respect to the freedom-fighters who embarked the Quit India Movement.

Notably, on this day in 1942, father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi gave the Quit India movement call to drive away Britishers from the country. The movement had begun from Gawalia Tank in Mumbai. The day is observed as August Kranti Day every year.
