Puri: A youth was critically injured after two bike-borne miscreants open fired on him near Gundicha Temple here on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as Sanjay Behera (27) alias Para of the holy town.
Behera, who sustained bullet injuries on his ear and shoulder, was immediately rushed to the District Headquarters hospital here. He was later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar as his condition deteriorated.
According to reports, Behera was standing near the Nakachana Dwar of Gundicha Temple in the city when the incident took place.
Though the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, police suspect that the incident was a fall out of past enmity.
Puri DSP Prasant Patnaik said, “Behera was shot on his head and shoulder. The firing might be based on prior hostility. We can give more information about his injuries after getting his medical report.
“Behera is involved in many criminal cases earlier. The miscreants are suspected to be his rivals. They may have shot two or three rounds on Para. We will soon interrogate the witnesses on the spot,” he added.
The victim is involved in many criminal cases earlier and many records have been registered on his name. According to sources, Para Behera was recently released from jail.
Para’s mother Ranjulata Behera said, she is unable to suspect anyone involved in the incident.
Over 20 cases including those of murder and extortion are pending against Behera, police said.
